Should School Start Later? Many people believe schools ought to start later, but what are the advantages of starting school earlier? I do not notice a difference between later and earlier start times for school. I think that two songs sounding alike does not always qualify as stolen work. Especially in today's pop music, melodies tend to be more on the simpler end in order to make songs catchier and easy to sing. This strategy helps create hits more easily since the listener will have an easier time getting a simple melody stuck in their head rather than a complex one. One type of chord progression has been popularized to the point of it single-handedly dominating the industry, and if a song does not use that chord progression, chances are it is an altered version of it. This further limits the different melodies that will sound good to the average listener. When a melody is similar, we should think about other factors that might set it apart. For example, although the melody might be the same, the instrumental could be completely different. Is it Right to Judge an Artist's Work Based on their Actions? Supporting art, whether it be music, artwork, or movies, supports those who create it. But what happens when those creators are no longer supported for the right reasons? Is it right to separate their work from their actions? Popularity can either be for the best, or for the worst. For some people, their view and opinion on a work of art relies on their standing in society. In order to like a piece of artwork, they must be well liked. And for some artists, liking their work can seem wrong because of actions they have done, or have done after. Then, a difficult question is asked, “Since this artist had done something terrible years later of what they created, would it still be okay to like what they made?”. Of course, this can apply to any form of works, not just art. My argument is you can choose to disapprove and not support the actions of an artist while still enjoying their works. A social psychologist Stanley Milgram examined several justifications offered by Nazis during the Nuremberg Trial including Adolf Eichmann’s trial in Jerusalem. After watching trial after trial, Milgram noticed that all of their defenses were strikingly similar. Most claimed that they were simply “following orders”. Milgram asked himself “Could it be that Eichmann and his million accomplices in the Holocaust were just following orders? Could we call them all accomplices?” Milgram recruited ordinary people who were told that the experiment they were going to take part in was to test the effects of punishment on learning ability. They could play the role of either “teachers” or “learners” in this experiment. The participants thought they had an equal chance to become a learner or a teacher but the experiment was designed so that all participants were going to become teachers.
